Biography:

Karol Antoni Lanckoroński, Count of the Zadora coat of arms (1848-1933), born in Vienna, son of Kazimierz and Leonia, née Potocka. He studied law in Vienna. From 1874, he travelled extensively, visiting Greece, Spain and Syria, among other places. In 1882, he took part in a research expedition to Lichtenstein. Two years later, he financed and took part in an archaeological expedition in the Anatolian area. The results of his research were published in several languages. His research activities were recognised internationally and he was appointed an honorary member by many major research centres. In 1888 he went on a trip around the world. From 1891 he was a correspondent of the Academy of Arts and Sciences. He collected art and was involved in politics, inheriting his father's chair in the chamber of the Vienna Parliament. His collection included works by the most eminent European artists, including Rembrandt, Titian and Masaccio, as well as Polish artists including Piotr Michałowski and Jan Matejko. He married three times. His first wife was Maria ks. Salm-Reifferscheidt-Raitz (1859-1897), his second was Franziska Xaveria hr. von Attems-Heiligenkreuz (1861-1893), with whom he had a son, Antoni (1893-1965). His second wife died shortly after giving birth. In 1897 he married again, this time his bride of choice was Margarethe of the von Lichnowskis (1863-1954). His last marriage resulted in two daughters, Karolina (1898-2002) and Adelaide (1903-1980). The children inherited their parents' estate, and from 1967 they co-founded the Lanckoroński Foundation.
