Dom Aktora

The Karaite Kienesa is located on Podvalna Street in Kiev. It was built in the Moorish style.

After the creation of the Soviet Union, the authorities ordered the kienesa to be closed. In 1926, it housed educational institutions and later a puppet theatre. From 1952, the building was used as the "Zorya" cinema, rebuilt again in 1968, and has housed the Actor's House since 1981. The interior of the temple was converted into a theatre hall and the vestibule into a cloakroom. Inside, many elements from the old decorations have been preserved. The women's galleries have survived, but the temple has lost its dome. In the 1970s, a small building was added to the kienesa, through which the interior is now entered. After Ukrainian independence, the kienesa continues to be used incompatibly with its purpose. There is a memorial plaque on one of the walls indicating the cultic nature of the building.
