Conservation of the personification of virtues by Tomasz Oskar Sosnowski in Rome

In the garden of the John Paul II Polish House in Rome are the statues Justitia, Victoria, Fortitudo and Belisarius with his daughter Eudoxia. These four sculptures representing personifications of the virtues are by Tomasz Oskar Sosnowski. In 2023, the Polonica Institute financed the cleaning of the statues so that they would regain their original appearance, as their contamination - mainly by organic substances - had increased significantly in recent years.

The sculptures were created in the 1850s and refer to Greek and Roman culture. They were made of Carrara marble. In 1992, they found their way from the Pontifical Polish College in Rome to the garden of the John Paul II Polish House. They were donated by the executors of the will of Father Jerzy Langman, who had previously owned them.

The author of the sculptures - Tomasz Oskar Sosnowski - came from Volhynia. He graduated from the Krzemieniec Lyceum and took part in the November Uprising. He honed his craft in Warsaw, Berlin and then in Rome in the workshop of Pietro Tenerani. He became firmly attached to the Eternal City in 1846 and remained here for the rest of his life. He taught sculpture at the Academy of St Luke.
