Biography:

Krzysztof Michał Bednarski (1953-) - Polish-Italian contemporary sculptor and graphic artist. Graduate of the 14th Klement Gottwald High School in Warsaw and the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where he graduated from the sculpture department in the ateliers of Jerzy Jarnuszkiewicz and Oskar Hansen. He defended his diploma thesis, entitled 'Total Portrait of Karl Marx,' on 5 July 1978. He was associated with Jerzy Grotowski's theatre and designed posters for it between 1976 and 1981. He is also the author of the poster for Waldemar Dzikie's 1983 film debut, "A Card from a Journey", and the poster for the Studio Theatre production "I, Bruno Schulz", directed by Jerzy Grzegorzewski. Most of his posters are in the Poster Museum at Wilanów, and he has also exhibited them at the International Poster Biennale in Warsaw since 1980. He occasionally worked in the quarries in Borowo from 1976 to create sculptures and to test his skills as a sculptor, something he could not do at the academy. He has lived in Rome since 1986. During the academic years 1996/97 and 2014-2017, he ran a guest studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He received his doctorate at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in 2014 for his work "Towards sculpture, or the history of one work without end." His works refer to communist propaganda, such as " Total Portrait of Karl Marx " (1978) and the socio-political situation of Poland during martial law, such as " Victoria-Victoria " (1983). One of the frequently appearing motifs in his work is the Moby-Dick, and his sculptural installation " Moby-Dick " from 1987 is now in the collection of ms2 - Museum of Art in Lodz. Bednarski has also starred in several films, including " Honeymoon night in broad daylight " (1982), " Up the stairs, down the stairs " (1988) and " My Italy " (2017).
