Biography:

Michał Szulc (1769-1812), Lithuanian architect of German origin, representative of late classicism. He graduated from the Vilnius Main School in 1788 with a doctorate in philosophy. He was a pupil of Laurynas Gucevičius. After Gucevičius' death, he was appointed professor of the Faculty of Architecture at Vilnius University. He took part in the Kościuszko Uprising. The book "Speech on Architecture" (1801) was published based on his lectures at the university. From 1799 he designed, built and reconstructed the educational buildings of Vilnius University. In 1809, during the reconstruction of the Vilnius University gymnasium, the ceiling collapsed. An accident also occurred during the conversion of the Piarist Church into a residential building. Because of the accidents, the police banned Schultz from designing and building. He was dismissed from his position as university architect, but remained a professor of architecture. In the summer of 1812, Schultz was entrusted with the construction of a pavilion for a gala dinner in honour of Emperor Alexander. Just before the ball, the pavilion collapsed. Shocked, Schultz threw himself into the Neris and drowned.
