Polish war cemetery

At the beginning of 1942, the redeployment of the Polish Armed Forces in the USSR (General Anders' Army) from the Soviet Russian Republic to the Central Asian Republics took place. Units of the 6th Infantry Division and the Army Organisation Centre were located in the then Kashkadarya region. Civilians also arrived at the places of formation of Polish units following the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on 12.08.1941 on the so-called "amnesty for Polish citizens." In the city cemetery of Chirakchi, a plot of land was set aside in a corner of the cemetery where the dead Poles were buried. The Council for the Protection of Remembrance of Struggle and Martyrdom identified 11 names of soldiers resting here, mostly from the 18th infantry regiment, who died in the regimental infirmary. The number of civilians who were buried here is unknown. The quarters did not survive the Soviet era - however, an area remains undeveloped with new burials, which local residents were able to point out. In 2001, it was fenced off by the OPWiM Council with a low fence from the other graves in the cemetery. A central monument was erected against the wall, while tombstones with the relief of a cross and 11 name plates were arranged in a row on either side of it. The central monument - is a milepost with a characteristic rectangular shape, uniform for all rebuilt cemeteries in Central Asia, topped with an eagle relief. Its form refers to the soldier's wandering. The monument bears a bilingual inscription (in Polish and Uzbek): "TU SPOCZYWAJĄ POLACY / 12 SOLDIERS / OF THE POLISH ARMY / IN THE EAST/ GEN. WŁ. ANDERS / AND CIVILIANS / FORMER PRISONERS OF WAR / PRISONERS / OF SOVIET GULAGS / WHO DIED IN 1942 / ON THEIR WAY TO THEIR HOMELAND/ HONOUR THEIR MEMORY". On the wall of the cemetery, next to the quarters, there are information plaques with an inscription in Polish and Uzbek that reads: "POLISH / WAR CEMETERY / CHIRAKCHI / FOUNDED BY / THE REPUBLIC OF POLAND / THANKS TO THE EFFORTS OF THE COUNCIL / FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE MEMORY / OF BATTLES AND MARTYRDOM / WHICH ALSO TAKES / CARE OF IT". Currently, the care of the cemetery is funded by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage . In 2018, the renovation of this necropolis was carried out with funds from the Ministry. The Ministry of Culture and National Heritage is also conducting research work to establish a census of civilians buried in cemeteries in Central Asia.
