Ida Fink memorial plaque in Zbarazh

On the 100th anniversary of Ida Fink's birth, a commemorative plaque dedicated to her was unveiled. Ida Fink is a Polish-language writer of Jewish descent. In 2008, she received the Israeli Literary Prize in Prose as the first writer to write in a language other than Hebrew.

Ida Fink was born on 1 November 1921 in Zbarazh, into the family of Ludwik Landau, a doctor, and Franciszka Stein, a teacher and vice-principal of a secondary school. She studied piano at the Conservatory of the Polish Music Society in Lwów. At the end of October 1942, she was sent with her younger sister and parents to the ghetto in Zbaraż, from where she managed to escape. She hid on the Aryan side until the fighting ended. After the war she ended up in Poland, from where she emigrated to Israel in 1957.

Her wartime experiences led her to become involved with the Yad Vashem Institute, where she took part in collecting documentation and testimonies of Holocaust survivors. She also began to write - her works dealt mainly with the Holocaust. In 1987, she published a collection of short stories, A Scrap of Time, which included the famous short story Zabawa w klucz. She died on 27 September 2011 in Tel Aviv.

Thanks to the support of the Polonik Institute through the Foundation for Partnership for Central and Eastern Europe, a plaque commemorating the outstanding writer was erected on the centenary of her birth in her hometown.
