Biography:

Wiktor Józef Podoski (1895-1960), Polish diplomat, lieutenant in the cavalry reserve of the Polish Army. The first extraordinary and plenipotentiary member of the Polish Republic in Canada. He studied mechanical engineering at the Royal Technical College and University of Glasgow, Scotland, and at the School of Economics and Political Science in London. From 1922, he worked as an assistant military attaché at the Polish Military Mission to the Polish Embassy in London, then in the Political Department of the Minister of Foreign Affairs. From 1929 to 1931, he was secretary of the Polish embassy in Washington. Shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, Podoski was appointed Consul-General of the Republic of Poland in Ottawa. On March 27, 1942, he was appointed as the first-ever Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary MP for the Republic of Poland in Canada (now the position of Ambassador). Head of the American Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in London from 1944-45. After returning to Canada, he settled in Ottawa. He was an employee of the Canadian government in the social security department for several years. He played an important role in preparing the ground for Polish mass emigration after World War II. He died in Ottawa and is buried in the family grave at Notre-Dame Cemetery in Ottawa, Ontario.
