Biography:

Aleksander Piotr Czekanowski (1833–1876), born in Krzemieniec, son of Wawrzyniec and Joanna (née Gostell), geologist and traveller, explorer of Central Siberia. He studied natural sciences in Kyiv and Dorpat. Following the January Uprising, he was exiled to Siberia, where he conducted geological and natural history research.

He was active in Irkutsk within the Siberian Branch of the Russian Geographical Society, studying, amongst other areas, the regions of Lake Baikal, the Lower Tunguska and the Lena, and discovering deposits of coal and graphite. For his achievements, he was awarded, amongst other honours, the gold medal of the Russian Geographical Society.
