Eugeniusz Czerwinski's architecture beyond the contemporary borders of Poland

His buildings inspired other architects in Lviv, and art deco and functionalism became the "leitmotifs" of his designs. Eugene Czerwinski is an architect without whom Lviv would not look the way it does today. What else is worth knowing about him? Here is a handful of the most important information.

Eugeniusz Czerwiński (1887-1930) was a prominent Polish architect who was born and died in Lviv. He was educated at the Faculty of Architecture of the Lviv Polytechnic and began working in his field while still a student. After some time, he also became a lecturer at his alma mater. It is noteworthy that he created designs for both residential buildings and objects of public use - not only in Lviv, but also in Jaremcz, Drohobych and Vorokhta.

After his studies, Czerwiński worked in the prestigious construction company of Alfred Zachariewicz and Józef Sosnowski , and later - under the tutelage of Ivan Lewiński . It was in his office that the budding architect we are describing became a co-author of the design for the Mykola Lysenko Higher Music Institute - a building with classicist facades. While Chervinsky's designs up to the 1920s were often realised in the art deco style, later he began to be inspired by functionalism .

One of the projects that came out of Czerwiński's hand was the design of a large residential building with 64 flats for the employees of the Postal Savings Bank . It exemplified the most significant achievements of Lviv residential architecture of its time. We should add that its façade was accentuated by classical pilasters and many elements were in the art deco style.

Together with the already mentioned Alfred Zachariewicz , Czerwinski also created a project for the reconstruction of the Main Post Office building , as well as a large number of pavilions in Lviv , known as the "Eastern Fair". The Czechoslovak pavilion here was in the style of early functionalism , the "Nafta" pavilion - was the result of inspiration by the national-romantic current, while the pavilion-rotunda was the result of fascination with classicist forms.
