The cemetery of the Koniecgorski gulag, commemorated by a monument

Kuliyhlag is the name of a complex of camps in the USSR, administered by the NKVD. At least 120 Poles were buried in the cemeteries of this complex - Biereznikov, Koniecgorskiy and Semenovskiy - during the Second World War. In 1997, the Russian authorities sent a list of 120 Poles buried in these cemeteries to the Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Remembrance, without distinguishing who was buried where.
The Koniecgorskiy gulag cemetery is located in the forest, about 2.5 km from Roczegda. The deportees were buried here between 1940 and 1942, after which the cemetery was closed and the road to it overgrown. Only one name of a Pole buried here is known - it was Jan Szubert (died 9.06.1941). In June 1996, on the initiative of Apolonia Sobolewska (sister of the above-mentioned deceased), a monument was erected at the cemetery to commemorate the Poles buried, missing and murdered in this gulag. It was funded by the OPWiM Council. The memorial consists of an erratic boulder, a cross behind it and a concrete slab in front of the boulder. An inscription plaque has been fixed on the boulder with the inscription: "To fathers, brothers, sons... Eternal peace! Eternal memory! To the Poles, Russians and all those who died in the GULAG in Koniecgorski. Compatriots of Poland. Roczegda, June 1996". Below is the same text in Russian.
