During the Second World War, Senior Sergeant Pilot Antoni Żurawski made his way from occupied Poland to the West and was assigned to a Polish transport unit in Takoradi (now Sekondi-Takoradi in Ghana). This unit was formed during the Second World War. It operated under the British 1st Aircraft Delivery Unit (ADU). The unit’s personnel were tasked with ferrying aircraft from the west coast of Africa to destinations including the Middle East, and later to Italy and the Far East.
7 December 1941. A. Żurawski was carrying out a transport flight; the aircraft caught fire during landing, and as a result of his injuries, the pilot died on 9 December 1941. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Cross of Merit with Swords.
The Polish pilot is buried in a war plot situated in the cemetery at Mainduguri.
The plot is under the care and management of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC).
