The 2nd Infantry Rifle Division, which took part in the fighting in France in 1940, was ordered to withdraw to Switzerland after running out of ammunition. On the night of 19-20 June 1940, the division's soldiers, numbering around 13,000, crossed the Swiss border. They were interned by the Swiss authorities and remained in Switzerland until the end of the war. Three sappers from the 2nd Sappers' Company of the 2nd DSP: Stanisław Lech, Jan Mroczek and Mikołaj Mroczek drowned in the Doubs River during an escape attempt from the internment camp on 6.10.1941. They were buried in the Soubey cemetery. Their tombstones are located under the cemetery wall, with plaques bearing the details of the soldiers and the divisional eagle.
