Monument to the Avenger in Doylestown

Variants of the name:

Pomnik Husarza w Doylestown, Pomnik „Avenger” w Doylestown, „The Hustler”, pomnik w Doylestown

Commemorating the victims of the Katyn massacre, the Doylestown monument to the Avenger, designed by Andrzej Pityński, is located in the Polish cemetery at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa. It was unveiled on 14 August 1988. The bronze plinth supports a hussar kneeling on one knee, supported by a sword carved in granite. The overall height is approximately 6 metres. On the pedestal are two plaques with inscriptions - "KATYÑ 1940" and "SMOLEÑSK 2010". The first, placed originally, has a quotation from the report of the US Congress Special Investigation Committee to Investigate the Katyn Massacre:

"This Committee unanimously finds, beyond any question of reasonable doubt, that the Soviet NKVD (People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs) committed the mass murders of the Polish officers and intellectual leaders in the Katyn Forest near Smolensk, Russia. Excerpt from the Report of the Select Committee filed with the Congress of the United States on July 2, 1952, House of Representatives No 2430." (The Committee unanimously acknowledges beyond any doubt that the Soviet NKVD (People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs) committed the mass murder of the Polish officers and intellectual leaders in the Katyn Forest near Smolensk, Russia).

The second secondary plaque, placed after the Smolensk disaster, reads:

"To the memory of the President of the Republic of Poland Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria together with a delegation of 94 people going to the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, who died in a plane crash on 10 April 2010".
