Outdoor sculpture in Hořice
Gothard 1639, Hořice, Czech Republic

The work was created during one of the international stone sculpture symposia, which have been frequently organised in Central Europe since the 1960s. Many works created during these symposia remain on Mount Gotard. In Hořice, this tradition has long been cherished. As early as the late 19th century, the town became an important centre for Czech sculpture; a sculpture school was established there, and to this day it is home to works by the most outstanding Czech sculptors of many generations, including those created during open-air workshops. Prague television dedicated a documentary film, *Metamorphoses of Stone*, to the creation of Ryszka’s work. The sculptor took part in many international open-air events of this kind, and large-scale works in stone became one of the main strands of his creative output. Unlike in other forms, in these non-representational works the artist seeks out the energy lying dormant within the material, bringing to light the organic analogies of the sculptural process. The solid block of stone in Hořice expresses this most fully. Ryszka’s sculptures reveal the influence of Henry Moore’s work, a similar quest for monumental form, the austerity of which is almost always tempered by the organic fluidity of the forms. It is here that these parallels are most evident.
