Tadeusz Lesisz: soldier and architect

Tadeusz Lesisz belonged to the generation of Poles who nurtured the memory of their homeland in exile after the war wanderings. Born on 10 February 1918 in Kozienice, he fought in the Second World War. He was a Naval officer, fighting in the Atlantic. He also took part in the Normandy landings. After the war, he settled in the UK, where he devoted himself to architecture and social activities.

The most important evidence of his work is the Divine Mercy Church in Manchester , formerly owned by the Welsh Baptists. After the building was purchased by the Polish community in 1958, Lesisz led its redevelopment, designing the entire interior and developing the concept for the stained glass windows. The parish's website states that "he was able to conjure up the beauty of Poland within the walls of a Welsh Protestant church, and all its different sides - from the sea to Lviv". The temple became one of the focal points of Polish life in the city, and its decoration an expression of remembrance of the homeland and of those who died during the war.

Lesisz's stained glass windows combine simplicity of form and deep symbolism. They are dominated by cool blues and golden reflections of light that evoke the sea and hope. Religious motifs intermingle with patriotic ones, creating a space of concentration and reverie. The interior of the church also hides urns with soil from the battlefields of Europe and many mementos associated with Poland. It is a silent tribute to Polish soldiers scattered around the world.

Tadeusz Lesisz, however, did not limit himself to art. For many years he was one of the leaders of the Polish community in Manchester , then the second largest in the UK. He organised national celebrations and made sure that traditions were passed on to younger generations of emigrants. In 1990 he designed the Katyn Memorial in Manchester's South Cemetery. The idea was to create a memorial which, for the first time, was a public reminder of Soviet responsibility for this monstrous crime.

For his military, social and artistic activities, he was honoured with many decorations, including the Knight's and Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, the Gold Cross of Merit, the Cross of Valour, the Sea Medal (three times) and the Cross of Combat Action of the Polish Armed Forces in the West. He also received numerous British campaign medals such as: 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star, Atlantic Star, Italy Star or War Medal 1939-1945, as well as the Vatican decorations Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice and the Order of Saint Gregory the Great.

He died on 23 September 2009 in Manchester.
