Biography:

August Zamoyski is an extremely intriguing figure, endowed with many talents. He loved both art and life itself. As well as being an artist who was keen to experiment with form and style, he was also highly regarded as an athlete. What else is good to know about him and why should you immerse yourself in his work? We answer.

August Zamoyski (1893-1970 ) - born in Jablon, one of the most outstanding Polish sculptors of the first half of the 20th century. He came from a well-known aristocratic family. After graduating from the General Paweł Chrzanowski Gymnasium, he decided to continue his education in Switzerland and Germany, where he attended a drawing course and where he met Stanisław Przybyszewski - he then joined the expressionist group BUNT . He later settled in Zakopane, where he spent several exceptionally creative years. He then moved to New York and later to Paris. He also spent 15 years in Brazil - in Rio de Janeiro he ran his own school of sculpture - before returning to France again.

At the beginning of his career, Zamoyski became interested in Formism - the group of artists working in this trend also included Tytus Czyżewski, Leon Chwistek and Witkacy , with whom the sculptor maintained close relations at the time. An example of a sculpture in this trend is "Ich dwoje" ["The two of them"], a work inspired by Futurism and modern dance , which was created in many variants. In 1923, however, he decided to ostentatiously break with this aesthetic and spectacularly destroyed many of his sculptures during a happening.

Later, August Zamoyski began to create works in the classicist-realist spirit , concentrating mainly on female portraits, nudes and works inspired by nature p one can say that he reached artistic maturity at that time. From 1950 onwards, a period of New Expressionism began in his oeuvre, within which he created sculptures mainly on religious themes . At that time, art became for the artist a space for metaphysical experiences and at the same time a mirror showing the depth and mystery of man.
