Graves of Poles murdered before World War II

Between Petrozavodsk and Voznesensk, on the 19th kilometre of the road, there are mass graves hidden in the forest of the victims of Stalinist repressions, who were shot in the Krasnyj Bor settlement in 1937-1938. Representatives of various nationalities, including Poles, Finns, Karelians and Russians, are buried here. The site was revealed in 1997 thanks to the work of Yuri Dmitriyev. Based on Russian records, it was determined that at least 3776 people were buried here. An incomplete list of the victims, written down in Russian, is available on the Internet, with 1195 names, including only five Poles.
In 2016. The General Consulate of the Republic of Poland in St Petersburg funded a cross and a plaque in honour of the Poles and victims of other nationalities buried here. The inscription reads: "1937-1938 To the memory of Poles and people of other nations, victims of repression, who found eternal peace in this land. May they rest in peace".
12.01.2023 r. The Ambassador of the Republic of Poland in Moscow, Krzysztof Krajewski, paid tribute to the victims of all nationalities by laying flowers at the monument erected in 2016 and at the site where a Catholic cross had stood until recently. It was destroyed in an act of vandalism by so-called unknown perpetrators after Russia's aggression against Ukraine in 2022.
