Polish Army soldiers' quarters in Antokol cemetery

In 1918, German and Russian soldiers killed in the First World War were buried in the Antokol Cemetery. The Cemetery of Polish Soldiers killed and deceased in 1919-1921 in the Polish-Bolshevik war was later established near the German cemetery. Here rested 1,626 soldiers who died in combat or died later as a result of wounds and illnesses. Soldiers from other cemeteries in the vicinity of Vilnius, e.g. from Burbiški in the municipality of Trakai and from Pospieszka, were exhumed to this cemetery.
The Polish quarters survived the Second World War and the communist period, but not all the crosses with names have survived to the present day - some of them were destroyed during the construction of Soviet memorials. Between 1998 and 2005, the Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Remembrance carried out the restoration of the quarters based on the designs of Edward Malachowicz and Janusz Smaza. It took a very long time to reach an agreement with the Lithuanian side regarding the main commemoration. Finally, the central cross was set up in 2005 on the hill overlooking the quaternion. At the foot of the cross was placed a granite plaque with the inscription: "In tribute / to the soldiers of the Polish Army / fallen and dead from wounds / in battles against the Bolsheviks / in the years 1919-1921 / Honour their memory! / Government of the Republic of Poland / Vilnius 2005". Below is the same inscription in Lithuanian.
Due to the location of the plot in a hilly and forested area, the cemetery is susceptible to external factors, as a result of which the graves are degrading. In 2022, within the framework of a task co-financed by the programme of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage "Sites of National Remembrance Abroad", the Foundation Aid to Poles in the East developed a project for the renewal of the cemetery section.
