Description of Slavut

The text describes Slavuta, the former property of the Sanguszko dukes. It mentions the privilege granted to the town by August III in 1754 (Source: Tygodnik Illustrowany, Warsaw 1873, Series 2, T:11, p. 316, after: Digital Library of the University of Łódź).

A modernised reading of the text.

Slavuta. Former property and residence of the Rev. Duke Sanguszko.

Sławuta could perfectly well serve as a representative of the rest of the Sanguszko estates scattered around Volhynia; the general characteristics of the Sanguszko estates, which were so nicely sketched by Kraszewski in his travels through Volhynia, could be applied without any change to Sławuta. Thanks to the efforts of Fr Koman, the improvements made, the costly factories, and even the settlement of a large number of foreigners, have not given it any foreign characteristics; thus the town of Slavutė is one of those fortunate places that make a pleasant impression on travellers at first sight. The large, well-kept pine forests that surround it form a backdrop against which the white houses of the town's manufacturers and residents are beautifully displayed. In the middle of the vast market square rises the magnificent town hall, with shops all around; a little further on are the factory buildings, with their tall chimneys, from which billowing black clouds of smoke testify to the active state of the works. And on a lofty hill, as if to guard the whole of this busy settlement, sat the magnificent ducal palace, with a two-storey outbuilding, brick outbuildings, a stable housing the herd of Arabian horses so famous a few years ago, and a lovely stone church, with a golden cross on its dome. The Ilorin flows through the middle of the town in a wide meandering ribbon, with a Swiss mill and a causeway. A strolling garden stretches along the river bank, where an itinerant troupe of actors or acrobats sometimes gives performances. All this has been devised and arranged to meet the needs and make life more pleasant for the inhabitants. The mechanical workshop, the extensive beet plantations, and the cloth, sugar and paper factories, whose products are known throughout the country, providing a means of earning a living through work generously rewarded, increased the wealth and well-being of the population of several tens of thousands of people who settled on Fr Koman's estates and in the surrounding villages. They reverently mention the name of this magnate in Volhynia, who so sensibly understood his task and so conscientiously fulfilled it. The history of the town is dark. The only written trace of its history is a privilege granted by August III in 1754; earlier documents must have been lost during the Tartar and Cossack invasions. The magnificent local chateau has almost no expensive relics, as almost all of them have been transported to Zaslavl. Of the few paintings that remain, only two are worthy of note. The first, depicting the Diet of Sigismund III, where Zolkiewski brings the captive princes of Shuisky to the king, is apparently a Dolabella original and, carefully restored, is the most beautiful decoration of the palace. The second work, of a more recent school, depicts the victory of the Duke-Herman Koman Sanguszko at Lla 1565. The library has a rich theological section, a collection of Polish chroniclers, miniature manuscripts, old brochures of various contents and old engravings, namely Polish ones. In Fr Koman's flats one can see a collection of old weapons, several flags sewn on an atlas, lovely watercolours and a silver cross, very ancient. In the church, there are several nice paintings, imported from Italy; and under the black marble table, to the right of the great altar, an iron door leads to the tombs of the Sanguszko family.
