Biography:

Józef Poniatowski (1763-1813), born in Vienna, son of Andrzej Poniatowski and Teresa of the Dukes of Kinski. He grew up in a German-speaking environment, closely associated with Vienna and Prague. His uncle was King Stanisław August Poniatowski. The time he spent with him in Warsaw brought him closer to Poland and its cause. From 1789, he served in the Polish army. There he attained the rank of major-general. He took part in numerous battles. When he found out that King Stanislaus, had joined the Targowicki Confederation, he returned the orders he had received. He fought in the Kościuszko Uprising and later at Napoleon's side. In 1812, he joined the General Confederation of the Kingdom of Poland. He died at the Battle of Leipzig.
