Sculpture by Tomasz Oskar Sosnowski, 'Pieta (Removal from the Cross with St John the Evangelist)' in Rome

The sculpture 'Pieta (Removal from the Cross with St John the Evangelist)' by Tomasz Oskar Sosnowski was created around 1870 and is located in the vestibule of the sanctuary of the Holy Steps in Rome, Lateran (exact address: Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano 14). Created in white marble, the statue is 1 m high and is set on a plinth also 1 m high.

The pedestal bears an inscription certifying that it is a gift of Pope Pius IX in 1875 (the 29th year of his pontificate). The sculpture was originally placed in the Chapel of St Lawrence (also known as the Sancta Sanctorum), to which the Holy Stairs lead. Today, the sculpture is housed in a glass display case.
