Column in Novosibirske Zahalchytsya - restoration works

Information about the object:
. The column in Novosibirske Zahalchytsya was erected next to the parish church of All Saints dating back to 1664 (today - Epiphany church). Placed on a plinth with the Pilawa coat of arms, it was topped with a statue of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. The sculpture is an exceptionally valuable monument of the Baroque period. The stylistic features of the statue represent the so-called Lvov rococo school; the high class of the workshop allows attributing the object to the circle of Jan Jerzy Pinsel's works.

The column was significantly deviated from the vertical, the shaft and the base of the sculpture were cracked, secured with steel welts, the original stone steps were cast in concrete. Advanced destruction of the statue and decorative elements was evident; the object was furthermore covered with secondary repaints and cement.

The stone sarcophagus from the crypt of the Fredro family in the Church of the Assumption of Our Lady in Rudki is a unique object of significant historical value. Due to its state of preservation, it required comprehensive conservation measures aimed at eliminating the causes of damage to the historic substance and protecting it from further destruction.

Completed works:
The project concerned conservation work on monuments from the Lviv region of Ukraine - an 18th century column from Novosiolki Zahalchytsya (Zlochev region) and a 17th/18th century stone sarcophagus from the basement of the Fredro Chapel in the Church of the Assumption of Our Lady in Rudki (Samborskiy region).

Due to the significant extent of damage and the complexity of conservation problems, work on the object was divided into two stages. In 2022, the column was dismantled and transported to the workshop, where conservation of the statue and sculptural elements was carried out, including: disinfection, cleaning of the surface from build-up, injection of cracks with resins or their stitching with stainless steel or fibreglass rods, removal of secondary repaints and cement mortar, structural reinforcement. In addition, an expert structural opinion was carried out with guidelines for the construction of a new foundation.

Cleaning of the surface of the sarcophagus from dirt, build-up and corrosion products, bonding of cracked fragments, restoration of cavities, restoration of the polished surface and surface protection were carried out.

Funding: Programme of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage "Protection of Cultural Heritage Abroad".
