Parish Church of Sts Peter and Paul in Czernichów

Variants of the name:
Cerkiew Świętych Apostołów Piotra i Pawła w Czernichowie

Historical outline
Czernichów on the Strwiąż River is located north of Sambor. When searching for this village, one must be careful not to confuse it with others whose names sound identical. Among the most common misleading clues, Chernihiv spelled with the same 'h' near Kiev appears first. The second, already somewhat closer example, is Chernichiv on the Seret river near Ternopil. Czernichów discussed here was mentioned in sources as early as the 15th century. At that time it was part of the Sambrian economy. Over time, however, it became a separate tenancy. Among the owners there are among others: Rafał Grochowski, Mikołaj Rzeszowski, Jerzy Madaliński, or Konstanty Szeptycki. At the end of the 19th and in the 20th century it belonged to the Lewicki family. The village was subject to various parishes. At first it was under Łanowice, then Sambor, then Kalinin, and finally Koniuszki Siemianowskie, where the parish was established in 1925.

. The year 1879 saw the consecration of a small wooden church, which had suffered quite badly during the First World War. Not only were its walls damaged by artillery shells, but the bell was confiscated in 1917.

In 1924, the church was repaired and new bells were consecrated. Unfortunately, the building was closed in 1946. In 1961, it was taken over by the Orthodox Church. Today it is used by Greek Catholics. It is now used by Greek Catholics as the Church of Saints Peter and Paul.

Architecture
The building is located on a fenced square. In the past, it was probably entirely made of wood. Later, the chancel was plastered (as of 1992). Today (2023) it is plastered and fully converted stylistically to the aesthetics characteristic of Eastern churches.

The church was built on an elongated rectangular plan. On the chancel side, it was closed polygonal (today this part is largely rounded). There is a brick vestry to the north, an annex to the south and a small porch to the east. All these segments were built on rectangular plan. The windows are mostly rectangular and closed with a semicircle. The roofs are pitched, with a triple-pitched roof on the vestry. All are covered with sheet metal. Nowadays, just in front of part of the chancel on the roof there is an onion-shaped cupola ending in a cross, characteristic of eastern churches.

The windows are rectangular, closed with a semicircle, three each in the side walls of the nave and two in the apse. The interior is covered with a curved collector ceiling. The music choir is wooden. The fate of the original furnishings is unknown. Surrounding the church is a wooden bell tower.
