Grób ofiar NKWD zamordowanych w Brzeżanach

During the evacuation of the NKVD prison in Brzeżany in June 1941, some of the corpses of the murdered prisoners were thrown into the Zlota Lipa river. In the villages through which the river flowed, recognised corpses were fished out and buried in local cemeteries. A group of unrecognised corpses, mainly Poles whose families were already in Siberian labour camps at the time, swam as far as the village of Sarańczuki near Podhajec. The corpses stopped at a sluice on the river. Local residents excavated the corpse and buried it in a mass grave in the cemetery next to the Orthodox church in the centre of the village. There were probably 16 people buried in this grave, including Leonard Bajorek, a participant in the fighting against the Germans in September 1939.

The grave was well cared for throughout, but there was and is no Polish accent on it. Right next to it are buried members of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, for this reason Ukrainian flags - blue-yellow and black-red - fly on both sides of this grave. The inscription in Ukrainian reads (translated into Polish): "Eternal remembrance / to the brothers - victims / of Stalinist repressions / 1941".
