Sculpture depicting Nicolaus Copernicus at the United Nations in New York

A contemporary sculpture depicting the head of Nicolaus Copernicus is on display at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The work, made of Finnish granite, was donated to the UN in 1970 by Eugeniusz Kulaga, the Permanent Representative of the People's Republic of Poland to the organisation from 1969 to 1975, on the occasion of the upcoming celebrations of the astronomer's 500th birthday (1973). The authors of the sculpture were Alfons Karny and Z. Dębniak. Of considerable size (80 x 55 cm), Copernicus' head was placed on a double pedestal.
