Cerkiew pw. Świętego Michała w Hucie Nowej

Historical outline
The village is located about 6.5 km north-west of Monasterzysk. Recorded owners include the Potocki, Bako de Hette and Mlodecki families. The village lies within the range of the larger Monasterzysk, so until the mid-1920s it was subordinate to the parish there. For the inhabitants of Huta Nowa, however, the distance of almost seven kilometres to the church proper was too onerous. In 1912, therefore, it was decided to establish an independent parish in the village and a number of efforts were made to this end. There had already been a religious building in Huta Nowa in the form of a public chapel since 1880, and it initially served as a provisional church. In 1932, however, it was rebuilt with contributions from parishioners.

After the Second World War, the inhabitants had to leave the village. Some of the furnishings were saved by being taken to Silesia. In 1988, the church became Orthodox and four years later it was taken over by Greek Catholics and consecrated as St Michael's Church. Renovations were carried out in the 1990s.

Architecture
The building is located in the centre of the village. The presbytery faces north. The church is a wooden building of rather simple construction. It consists of a nave and a narrower presbytery, closed with a trilateral. The nave is entered through a rectangular porch. Above the porch is the music choir. In turn, the altar section is flanked by square annexes that serve as ancillary rooms and sacristies.

The elevations have been boarded in horizontal orientation and the corners reinforced with foxing. As is usually the case, the most interesting element from the outside is the porch façade, cut in half by a capitular cornice and closed with a triangular gable. In the centre, there is a rectangular entrance opening over which a window has been placed.

The generally simple form of the church is also reflected in the simplicity of the roofs. The nave, the porch and the presbytery have gable roofs, differing only in minor details. Only over the annexes are there gable roofs. All surfaces are covered with sheet metal, as is the turret for the bell tower. It is built on an octagonal ground plan and topped with a tall pyramid with a knop and cross.

The interior of the building is also relatively simple. A pseudo-vaulted ceiling dominates the main part. Ceilings are used in the vestries. The chancel is lit by a circular window or oculus. The other window openings are rectangular and segmental closed. The music choir has the simple form of a balcony with a balustrade.

The most important elements related to the furnishings and surroundings of the church include:

  • Neo-Baroque altarpiece, dated after 1880 with the paintings "Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary" and "Annunciation";
  • Wooden polychrome pulpit;
  • Neo-Gothic baptismal font, early 20th century, wooden, chalice-shaped;
  • Paintings, among others: "Sacred Heart of Jesus", "Virgin Mary" (including 1 in a gilded frame), "Heart of the Virgin Mary", "Saint Anthony";
  • Sculptures including: "Christ Crucified", "Dead Christ" (for Easter tomb), "Christ Risen";
  • Wooden bell tower dating from the 19th century.

As Kinga Blaschke writes in her study of the building, it is preserved in good condition. It is a building with simple forms, which does not directly refer to specific historical styles. The author draws attention to the similarity to the chapel in neighbouring Izabella. It is most likely that both buildings were erected by the same local workshop.
