Parish Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary Help of Christians in Kluvičiny

Historical outline

The village is located on the road from Grzymalov to Chorostkov on the stream flowing into the Tajna. Kluwińce was also called "Kluwińce" in the past. The oldest mention of this village dates back to the 17th century. The owners of the estate include Kopyczyński, Baworowski (18th century), Bogucki and Bobrowski (19th century), and in the 20th century Bogucki.

Historical sources indicate the existence of a private chapel in the village (1816). A later church was built in 1894, but in its early days it functioned as a public chapel. Kluwińce was subordinated to the parish in Chorostkowo. However, in 1923 an exposition was established here, which two years later was elevated to parish status. A vicarage was added to the existing chapel, but this was demolished in the early 1930s in order to build a new one.

Unfortunately, the Second World War brought a time of terror from the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. In 1944, there was an attack by Ukrainians with the aim of murdering Father Kazimierz Świdkiewicz. He, however, was kept outside the presbytery.

In 1946, the Soviet authorities closed the church. From 1949, the building was used as a kolkhoz grain warehouse. It has stood empty since 1987.

Architecture

The building is located in the southern part of the village, south-east of the church. The presbytery faces north-west. The church was built of brick and plastered. It consists of a two-bay nave and a short, semicircular closed altar part, to which a sacristy of square plan is attached.

The facades are set on a low plinth and framed by lisens. They support the moulded cornice broken above. The front elevation is single-axis. It closes with a triangular gable. The main entrance is located on the axis and is set with a pointed arch in a closed recess. On the sides, there are smaller rectangular recesses closed with a pointed arch, in which sculptures are incorporated. Above the entrance, a circular window in a profiled frame was installed. The gable was framed by pedestals topped with obelisks.

The nave, vestry and presbytery were covered with a gable roof. At the close of the altar area, the roof changes into a conical roof.

The articulation of the internal walls was carried out with prominent lisens passing into a pseudo-column vault. The apse is closed with a conch, a decorative type of vault resembling a shell. The windows in the building are mainly rectangular and closed with pointed arches.

The most important elements related to the church's furnishings and surrounds included:

  • A wooden, lacquered Romanesque-style main altar with a painting depicting the image of Our Lady Immaculate;
  • Wooden lacquered side altars with images of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Heart of the Virgin Mary;
  • A brick belfry in the form of a section of masonry, with three rectangular, semicircularly closed clearances for the bells.

In his study of the church, Piotr Krasny notes the relatively good state of preservation of the building. However, it currently lacks a bell tower as well as all the furnishings. The statues of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Mother of God are located in the nearby church.
