Biography:

Cyprian Godebski (1835-1909), born in Méry-sur-Cher. His grandfather Cyprian Godebski was a legionary and poet, while his father Franciszek Ksawery was a November insurgent, émigré activist, historian and custodian of the Ossoliński National Institute. Cyprian Godebski graduated from high school at the Polish National School of Batignolles in Paris. He received his education in sculpture in the studio of François Jouffroy. After moving out of France, he lived in Lvov and Vienna. From 1870 he was a professor at the St Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts. He was the author of numerous monuments and sculptures and an animator of the artistic life of Paris, where he ran a salon. His realisations can be found in many cities of Europe and the world. He had one child, a daughter, also an artistic personality, Misia Sert. He became a member of the French National Academy in 1877 and an officer of the National Legion twelve years later. He died in Paris.
