Cemeteries in Olkowicze

Olkowicze | Belarus
biał. Alʹkowiczy (Альковічы)

There are 2 cemeteries in Olkowice with tombstones commemorating Poles. The first, the church cemetery, is located next to the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. There is only one gravestone there - that of Rev. Stanisław Kuczyński from 1996. A granite tablet from 1873 with the inscription has been preserved in the southern wall of the cemetery: 3 SEPT. 1878 R. THIS FENCE / OF STONE NEXT TO THE / OLKOWICE CHURCH / WAS BUILT / WITH THE HELP OF THE PARISHIONERS / THANKS TO [...] THE LOCAL PARISH PRIEST / XS. KONSTANTY / KOSCIA.

The second necropolis is an active Catholic cemetery (formerly parish cemetery), established at the beginning of the 19th century, located at the southern edge of the village. The cemetery, rectangular in plan, is situated on a slight hill. It covers an area of 1.65 hectares and is fenced with concrete posts with a low metal mesh. There is no division into alleys and plots. The oldest dated gravestone is that of Józef Radziwiłłowicz and his wife Wiktoria, dating from 1834. The gravestone is slightly damaged, as a result of a tree falling on it. The inscription preserved on it reads: from the front: JÓZEFOWI I WIKTORYI / RADZIWIŁŁOWICZOW //, from the right side: JÓFEF 1828 / D. 28 MARCH / from the back: GRATEFUL SONS / IGNACI AND RAFAL / from left side: vICTORY 1834 / D. 7 MARCH //. Of the gravestones of interest in terms of their form, of note is the monument to Wiktoria Koziełłowa of 1890 in the form of a rock placed on a slab base with a polygonal inscription, and the cippus of grey granite commemorating Ludwika of Koziełło Borowska of 1881 (see bibliography).
Information about the cemetery has been published (see bibliography).
