Biography:

Alina Maria Machnicka (1923-2010), born in Warsaw. During the Nazi occupation, she was in the Warsaw Ghetto, a member of the Polish resistance movement and deported to Nazi concentration camps such as Pirna, Majdanek, Auschwitz II-Birkenau, Stutthof, Kraków-Płaszów and Dresden (Holocaust Survivors and Victims Database). After the war, in the late 1940s and early 1950s, she worked for the Ministry of Foreign Trade and, from 1954, as a journalist for Trybuna Wolności and Polish Television. She was one of the first female journalists to be assigned to the Experimental Television Centre.

In 1955, Machnicka unsuccessfully applied to her mother and extended family in Israel. In 1968, while an editor at Polish Television, she went to France on a scholarship and never returned to Poland. The communist authorities considered her departure a betrayal. It was only in December 1976 that she was allowed to change her Polish citizenship to French. Together with Jerzy Urban, she founded URMA, which published the weekly Nie.
