He left behind an extraordinarily rich legacy and enriched Lviv’s architectural landscape with buildings that are now the hallmarks of the former Galician capital. Juliusz Hochberger was a designer who boldly took on a variety of architectural challenges – as chief architect, he created a vision for the city that proved timeless and continues to inspire admiration to this day.

Juliusz Hochberger ( 1840–1905) was a Polish architect who was born in Poznań, studied at the Royal Academy of Civil Engineering in Berlin, and also spent many years in Lviv . He arrived in the city in the early 1970s, when he won a competition and took up the post of Director of the Department of Urban Planning – thanks to him, during his more than 30 years in office, significant changes were made to the city’s landscape.

Hochberger designed numerous educational establishments , some of which are classified as so-called ‘red’ schools . These combine exceptional visual appeal with practical functionality, and their elegant façades certainly catch the eye of passers-by. Thanks to the architect, the Higher Real School in Lviv was also established , although it is no longer in operation today.

The architect’s body of work also includes the plans for the building of the former Maria Magdalena Comprehensive School – this building is a fine example of historicism , featuring elements of medieval architecture . A few words should also be said about the former St Anne’s School – its building is inspired by the Romanesque and Gothic styles.

Hochberger also designed the building of the Galician Provincial Assembly , which today houses the headquarters of the University of Lviv . In this case, he combined two aesthetic conventions: Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Baroque. He also developed the architectural concept for the building of the Mutual Aid Society .

At 16 Strzelców Siczowych Street stands a building based on Hochberger’s design, built in the Neo-Renaissance style . It was formerly owned by an insurance company; today it is the headquarters of the Institute of Postgraduate Education at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. When discussing the architect’s legacy, one must not forget the spectacular Neo-Gothic gates that crown the Lychakiv Cemetery.
