Juliusz Hochberger's architecture beyond the contemporary borders of Poland

He left behind an extraordinarily rich legacy and enhanced the architecture of Lviv with buildings that are now landmarks of the former Galician capital. Juliusz Hochberger was an artist who boldly took on various design challenges - as chief architect he created a vision of the city that proved timeless and still delights today.

Juliusz Hochberger (1840-1905 ) was a Polish architect , who was born in Poznan and studied in Berlin at the Royal Academy of Building, while he also spent many years in Lviv . He came to this city at the beginning of the 1970s, when he won a competition and took the position of director of the City Building Department - thanks to him, over 30 years of activity, significant changes were made to the city's landscape.

Hochberger designed many educational facilities , some of which are among the so-called ' red' schools . They combine exceptional visual and practical qualities and their elegant facades definitely catch the eye of passers-by. The architect was also responsible for the establishment of the Higher Normal School in Lviv , , which is no longer in use today.

In the architect's oeuvre one can also find plans for the building of the former Maria Magdalena General School - an excellent example of historicism , with elements of medieval architecture . A few words should also be said about the former St. Anne's School - its building is inspired by Romanesque and Gothic styles.

Hochberger also designed the building of the Galician Parliament , which today houses the University of Lviv . Here he combined two aesthetic conventions: Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Baroque. He also developed the architectural concept for the building of the Mutual Aid Society .

The building, created on the basis of Hochberger's design and in the Neo-Renaissance style , is located at 16 Sichovykh Striltsiv Street. Formerly owned by an insurance company , it now houses the Institute of Postgraduate Education of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. Speaking of the architect's legacy, one cannot forget about the spectacular neo-Gothic gates that crown Lychakiv Cemetery .
