Biography:

Artur Rubinstein (1887-1982), born in Lodz, son of Isaac Rubinstein and Felicia (née Heiman), pianist. He began his piano lessons in Lodz, under the tutelage of Adolf Prechner. Then he studied in Warsaw, under Aleksander Różycki. In 1897, he left for Berlin to continue his education at the Higher Music School. He made his debut on 1 December 1900 at Berlin's Beethoven-Saal. In 1904, he moved to Paris. He made numerous tours of the United States (1906), Europe and South America. During World War II, Rubinstein was involved in helping Polish refugees, performing at charity concerts and supporting his compatriots materially. He lost almost his entire family as a result of the Shoah. One of his most famous gestures was on 13 May 1945. During a concert at the San Francisco Opera, organised for delegates and guests of the Peace Conference at which the United Nations was established, Rubinstein noticed the absence of the Polish flag. The Polish delegation was not invited to the conference because of Joseph Stalin's objections. Rubinstein, expressing his indignation, spontaneously played the 'Dabrowski Mazurka'.
