Biography:

Atanazy Raczyński (1788-1874), born in Poznań, son of Filip Nereusz Raczyński, count, landowner, politician, diplomat, art historian and collector. In his youth, he studied in Frankfurt and Berlin, and during the Napoleonic wars served in the Napoleonic army and the Duchy of Warsaw. After the wars he held diplomatic posts, including as Prussian ambassador in Lisbon and Madrid.

He was married to Anna Elisabeth Radziwill, with whom he had a son, Karol Edward. In 1824 he was given the title of Prussian Count. As a collector of art, especially of Western European paintings, he founded a gallery in 1853, whose collection, especially of Spanish art, became part of the National Museum in Poznan. His collection was later dedicated to the Raczynski Palace in Berlin, designed by Heinrich Strack.

The founder of the Obrzycka Ordynacja, he gained property in the Podkarpacie region through his marriage to Radziwiłł. He published books: 'Portuguese Art' (1846) and 'History of Modern German Art' (1836).
