The POLONIKA Institute funded a project in 2018 to describe the Library's photographic collection and digitise part of it.

"Let us celebrate the upcoming Millennium of the Polish State by funding and establishing an institution - the Ignacy Domeyko Polish Library, which will cover the countries of South America with its activities. It will be an indelible mark of our stay here and a lasting monument to Polish science and culture", called for in May 1960 by the Organising Committee of the Polish Library in Argentina. The Library was founded in the same year and is indeed the most enduring Polish cultural initiative in Argentina. Its founders did not want it to be a mere lending library. They assumed that it would have a scholarly character - the book collection was to help with research, including on emigration. In the course of time, it turned out that there were more than just books on the library's shelves. An archive was created that is today the largest documentation of the Polish presence in Argentina.

Photographs are particularly valuable in the library's collection. Nearly 4,000 photographs document the work of dozens of social organisations, celebrations of national holidays and ordinary life of emigrants in Argentina. They show the most important moments in the more than 100-year history of Polish emigrants living here. Thanks to a project funded by the National Institute of Polish Cultural Heritage Abroad POLONIKA, a report has been produced that describes the Library's photographic collections. Information about them will thus be available not only at the headquarters of this institution, but also in Poland, several thousand kilometres away.

As part of the project, we have also digitised and processed 200 photographs. They document in particular the social and cultural life of the several thousand Poles who came to Argentina after the war. They also show the beginnings of the Polish Library in the 1960s, the headquarters of the Polish House in Buenos Aires, which was bought thanks to community donations in 1950, and the vibrant life of the emigration in the 1960s and 1970s.
