Bożena Happach - architect and sculptor

Between 1969 and 1978 she studied at the faculties of civil engineering and architecture at the Gdansk University of Technology. She studied sculpture in private lessons with the sculptor Elżbieta Szczodrowska. After her studies, she worked at the Gdansk Monument Conservation Workshop. In 1982, she moved to Canada and settled in Montreal. She worked in architectural studios including "Peter Falus Architect" and worked in sculpture at the same time. She was accepted into the sculpture studio Atelier 213 in Laval, where she creates sculptures and prepares exhibitions together with members of the group.

Bozena Happach experiments in various materials - she works in clay, wood, stone, bronze and fibreglass. Her sculptures are characterised by minimalism, lightness and movement. She creates them on a small and large scale. Most often, the artist is inspired by sport, music, love, animals and birds, from which she creates whole series of sculptures on a given theme. Happach values the opportunity to participate in monumental sculpture symposia, where a joint project is created, experiences are exchanged and different working techniques are learned. She was a finalist in the Kingsbrae Garden Sculpture Competition in 2010, 2011, 2013, 2016. In 2013 she was a finalist in the Competition for Digital Images Arte/Musicale. The artist won the Medaille de la Justice design competition. She won second prize in the Centre de la Creativite du Gesu competition in Montreal.

The artist's works, most often made in gesso-duro and fibreglass, can be found in public spaces: the sculpture 'Compassion' at La Maison Jean Lapointe in Montreal, a mural at the Chateau Ramezay Museum in Montreal, a bas-relief is at the Interantional Education Institute in Calgary. Happach's sculptures adorn Claude-Jasmin Park in Boisbriand/Quebec and are located at Kingsbrae Garden in St Andrews/New Brunswick. The artist has participated in numerous exhibitions.

Happach is represented by galleries in Canada and the USA. Her sculptures can be found in gardens and parks in Europe, the USA, South America, Australia, Asia and Canada, as well as in many private collections.

Selected solo exhibitions: "Changement" Cultural Center, Dorval, 1993; "Duce et Dure", Gallery Octogone, Lasalle, 1994; "Ensemble", Galerie d'Art d'Outremont, 1995; Polish Consulate, Montreal, 2000; "A Temps Perdu", Hudson, 2009; Place des Citoyens, Ste-Adele, 2016; Bibliotheque, Mascouche, 2019. Bożena Happach, sculpture 'Circle' (Rim), fibreglass, 122 x 61 x 182 cm. The sculpture adorns the public space of one of the parks in the province of Quebec. The figure with the hoop is a subject to which the artist has returned many times. The girl stands straddled, one leg is in a large hoop held with both hands in front of her. A long, wide dress flows softly around her body. Her foot rises on her toes, giving movement and lightness to the whole figure. Happach operates with a minimalist form of expression. The female figure has no defined facial features, and the entire sculpture, modelled softly and sparingly, is a symbol of movement and grace rather than a specific person.
