Cemetery of the central lazarette of the NKVD-MVD gulag No. 275

After the end of the Second World War, the central lazaret of NKVD Gulag No. 275, intended mainly for German prisoners of war, operated in Lviv, in Zamarstynov. The cemetery of this lazaret has been preserved to the present day.

A total of 330 people were buried in the cemetery, including 274 Germans, 30 Austrians, 15 Hungarians, 4 Czechs, 4 Poles, 2 Yugoslavs, and 1 Frenchman.

This necropolis was established in October 1945 and functioned until the lazaret was closed in March 1949. During the period of the cemetery's operation, the Lager Board did not apply to the local authorities for permission to set aside an area for the burial of the dead (permission was not granted until 28.07.1949, i.e. after the lazaret was closed). After the cemetery was closed, it was not transferred under the supervision of the local authorities; it was supervised by the MVD Board of the Lviv region. A thorough renovation of the cemetery was carried out in the 1950s - it was fenced with a 1.7 m high brick wall (not preserved), concrete tombstones were erected on all graves and marked with the number of the grave and the section, and trees were planted on the inside of the fence.

This cemetery is located in the northern part of Lviv on Topolnoy Street, about 250 m east of Zamarstynovsky Cemetery. It occupies a square measuring 47 x 31 m and is divided into 13 plots with 25 graves each and 1 plot with 5 graves. The establishment of the cemetery and its state of preservation are a rarity in the history of Soviet gulags.
