Cmentarz podobozów nr 1-2 łagru NKWD-MWD nr 503

The cemetery of sub-camps 1 and 2 of NKVD-MVD gulag No. 503 was established in April 1945 and operated until 1949. In October 1949, the closed cemetery was handed over to the district branch of the MVD in Kemerovo for further supervision.

In 1958, the cemetery was inspected and found to be partially destroyed, while illegal allotment gardens had been established on part of the site. As the cemetery could not be reconstructed, the Kemerovo Region Board of Internal Affairs issued a decision to liquidate it, which was carried out the following year. The area was leveled and handed over to the authorities of the Zavodsky District of the city of Kemerovo.

A total of 1,035 people were buried in the cemetery, including 960 prisoners of sub-camp 2 and 75 prisoners of sub-camp 1. At least 31 Poles are among those buried.

The cemetery was located in the Zawodka District in the north-western part of Kemerovo, at a distance of about 500 m from the tanning plant, 400 m south-east of the pressure tower, 2 km west of the Kemerovo-Topki railway line and 3 km north-east of the "Pioneer" mine. It covered an area of 0.9 ha and was divided into 44 plots with an average of 20 graves in each. In the northern part of the cemetery there were an additional 5 plots where the prisoners of sub-camp 1 were buried.

The relics of the cemetery have been preserved to the present day and are looked after by the Russian organisation Wojennye Memoriały.
