Cemetery in Bieniakonia

Cemetery with Polish gravestone monuments. Information about the cemetery has been published (see bibliography).

According to Lewkowski and Walczak, ""the church cemetery in Bieniakonia is located next to the parish church on the north-eastern edge of the town. (...) It was established on a roughly rectangular plan (...), and covers an area of 0.3 ha. It is fenced by a stone wall with two gates on the south side and one on the north side. The central part of the square is occupied by the Church of St. John the Baptist (...). The cemetery was probably created in the middle of the 19th century and contains 13 tombstones dating from 1856 to 1994. The oldest one, dating from 1856, belongs to a Bieniakoński parish priest, Father Kazimierz Kulbacki. Maryla née Wereszczak hr Puttkamerowa, a friend of Adam Mickiewicz, is buried there. Her gravestone "has the form of a pedestal of red granite, with a bevelled face. It is surmounted by a small iron crucifix, made contemporary with the restoration of the tombstone". The inscription on the gravestone reads: "Ś. P. MARYLA Z WERESZCZAKÓW / HR. PUTTKAMEROWA / B. 1799 R. DECEMBER 24 / DIED. 1863 R. DECEMBER 28 / ETERNAL REST / DEIGN TO GIVE HER LORD". The entire cemetery is maintained in good condition, the tombstones are subject to restoration.

According to the aforementioned researchers, there is also an active Catholic cemetery in Bieniakonia, established in the mid-19th century. It covers 1.4 hectares, has a trapezoidal plan and a metal fence. The oldest gravestone from 1862, belonging to Catherine Karlkwist, was moved to the church cemetery. "Today, the oldest gravestone is a marble obelisk topped by an urn, with an inscription in German on the grave of Anna Amalia Titowsky from 1870, located in the central part of the cemetery. "There are several gravestones from the 2nd half of the 19th century, and Poles who died during World War II are also buried here. Particularly noteworthy is the inscription from the tombstone of the Mikulski family: "GRAVE OF THE MIKULSKI FAMILY / THEY DIED A TRAGIC DEATH IN 1944". The cemetery is dominated by Polish tombstones, both from the past and contemporary. The cemetery is in good condition.
