Deep Cemetery

The active Catholic-Orthodox cemetery, established at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, is located in the eastern part of the town, about 1200 m from the church and the town centre. The cemetery has an irregular rectangular plan and is located on several hills. Between the hills, an alley runs through a ravine, dividing the cemetery into two parts. In the northern part there is a Classicist cemetery chapel from the beginning of the 19th century, which after the January Uprising was turned into an Orthodox church. After 1945, the chapel stood abandoned and began to fall into disrepair. It has recently undergone restoration: the gables were bricked up and a new metal roofing was put on. It is built of brick, on a rectangular plan. "Front elevation with rectangular entrance on axis, flanked by corner pilasters, rectangular window openings with ear-shaped frames. Rear elevation divided by four pilasters. The wall planes of the chapel are rusticated". Most of the gravestones in the cemetery date from the 1st half of the 20th century. The oldest tombstones are located around the cemetery chapel. The oldest gravestone, a cast-iron rectangular gravestone framed by a simple strip with rosettes in the corners, belongs to Konstanty Brochocki and dates back to 1843. The following inscription has been preserved on the grave: / D. O. M./ KONSTANTEMY/ BROCHOCKI/ BORN/ IN THE YEAR 1818/ JULY 17 DAY DECEASED/ R. 1843 APRIL 15 DAY./ THIS MONUMENT/ ATTACHED/ COUSIN WINCENTY SŁAWIŃSKI/ DEDICATES TO HIM AND ASKS A PASSER-BY/ FOR A HAIL MARY/.
Documentation (32 sheets) and a plan (stored in the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage) were made for the cemetery. Information about the cemetery has been published (see bibliography).
