Where did John III Sobieski go?

As part of Thursday's behind-the-scenes discussions on polonies, we invite you to a meeting looking at one of Poland's most eminent rulers. What was the farthest place Jan III Sobieski reached? How many monuments, plaques and streets named after him are there abroad? Are there any cracks in the historical image of the great leader? What happened to his numerous mementoes after his death?

We would like to invite you to a trip along the trail of places connected with the king of Poland in the years 1674-1696. We will go, among other places, to the castle in Olesko, the birthplace of the future ruler, we will also visit Lviv and the collegiate church in Zhovkva, and we will talk about St. Petersburg. Of course, our itinerary will also include Vienna and... Wilanów!

The meeting was attended by Dr Marta Gołąbek, art historian. Since 2005, she has worked at the King John III Palace Museum in Wilanów, where she was in charge of the "Monumentum Sobiescianum" museum programme for many years. As part of the programme, she conducted, among other things, a search for Sobiescians preserved in the collections of Polish and foreign museums, as well as the documentation of sites associated with John III and his family. Co-author of the temporary exhibition 'Primus inter pares', which - interpreting the figure of John III - drew on artistic evidence from the period, as well as later forms of commemorating the king, not excluding the most popular ones, such as objects of everyday use.
