"Elektra" - sculpture by Boleslaw Balzukevich on the roof of the power station in Vilnius

On 14 February 1903, the first power station was put into operation on the right bank of the Neris River, on Pióromont in Vilnius. Instead of paraffin and gas lamps, 198 electric arc lamps lit up the city. It was one of the first and, of course, very few public power stations in the north-eastern territories of the former Republic, and one of the oldest power stations in Eastern Europe. Until recently, the power station was still in operation; today its building houses the modern Museum of Energy and Technology. On the roof of the building is Elektra, a sculpture representing the figure of a young woman holding a lantern. The lighthouse keeper carrying the fire - a symbol of a bygone era - falls to her knees before Elektra, blinded by the new light.

The sculpture, which weighs about three tonnes, was created by Bolesław Bałzukiewicz, a well-known professor at Stefan Batory University. Elektra survived both world wars, but for unknown reasons was dismantled in 1957. In 1995, sculptor Petras Mazūras recreated the sculpture, which was placed in its previous location, using old photographs.
