Commemoration of the residence of Juliusz Słowacki in Vilnius

Juliusz Słowacki lived in Vilnius from 1811. There he attended grammar school and studied law. It was in Vilnius, through the salon run by his mother, that he met Adam Mickiewicz. A commemoration of Słowacki is located on Zamkowa Street (Pilies 22).

Ferdynand Ruszczyc moved to Vilnius in 1908. After a few years, he moved to an apartment house located in the courtyard of house No. 22 on Zamkowa Street, precisely where Słowacki had lived years before. On the painter's initiative, a commemorative plaque with the inscription "Juliusz Słowacki lived here" was built into the wall of the tenement in 1927. Above the plaque was a bust of the poet on swan wings, chiseled by Bolesław Bałzukiewicz to a design by Ruszczyc, and the courtyard was named after Słowacki.
