PROJECT FOR A MONUMENT
for Mickiewicz, Krasiński and Słowacki.
The model for this monument was made in Rome by Mr Wiktor Brodzki, professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in St Petersburg, whose several works we have already given to our readers in woodcut prints.
On a base of an appropriate size, decorated with appropriate emblems, the artist accommodated the figures of the three main representatives of our more recent poetry. Mickiewicz stands in the middle, leaning slightly towards Krasiński, who occupies the left side of the monument; on the right sits Słowacki, pensive, with a cloud of thoughts on his forehead. Above this group rises the genius of poetry, with three wreaths in his hands above the heads of the poets spread out.
In the posture of each of the three bards, the artist has sought to highlight the different paths of thought and inspiration, the characteristic marks of their works. Mickiewicz's face is dominated by calm, Krasiński's by solemnity, Słowacki's by reverie. The idea is beautiful, the grouping is good. The only objection is that Mickiewicz unnaturally tilts his head slightly to the side, as if he felt the presence of the genius of poetry behind him and wanted to unveil him.
A difficult task, by the way, such a collective monument. The artistic execution must be carried out with great artistic flair if it is to make a proper impression and not fall into either the commonplace or theatricality. However, there can be no doubt that the powers of such a talented sculptor will be able to cope with the chosen object and that the monument in its final execution will have the hallmarks of a noble style and lofty solemnity appropriate to the task the artist has set himself.
