Description of the Mickiewicz Academic House in Lviv

The text describes the newly built Mickiewicz Academic House in Lviv. It mentions that the construction was made possible by a donation of 20,000 crowns by Stanislav Hassewicz of Warsaw. Felicja, née Szczepańska I v. Fredrowa, in turn, donated the site for the construction. A description of the building follows (Source: Tygodnik Illustrowany, Warsaw 1907, Półrocze II, p. 984, after: Digital Library of the University of Łódź).

A modernised reading of the text

The Mickiewicz Academic House in Lviv.

The dormitory, so eagerly awaited by the young people of Lwow for so many years, has finally been built. The tall mast carries an amaranthine-white banner, the front shines with the dear name of its patron, and the building is full of bustle, movement and life as only carefree youth can be. Jubilamus! The case has dragged on for a long time.

There were moments when it seemed that it would collapse completely, and that only stenographic records of fiery speeches and addresses on the subject would remain of the dreams of several academic generations. A donation of 20,000 crowns, made by the venerable Dr Stanislaw Hassewicz of Warsaw, put the matter on a new track. At the same time, the joyful news broke that Mrs Felicja 1 v. Fredrova, l-o v. Lir. Skarbek had generously offered a very valuable site in the centre of the city, close to the University, for the planned construction!

After an expert commission had examined the cost estimates and selected a plan, it was stipulated that the House should be built in the Zakopane style, and the entire project was entrusted to a well-known and honourable firm: Alfred Zachariewicz (the designer) and Jozef Sosnowski, who also completed their task in less than ten months. In the course of the construction work, considerable financial difficulties emerged. Here, too, Countess Skarbek came to the committee's aid, signing a debenture for 200,000 crowns, which guaranteed a building loan up to this amount. Members of the civic committee as well as the rector Dr Bronisław Dembiński and Professor Stanisław Głąbiński did not fail to lend a hand either. The house stood.

It is aesthetically pleasing, familiar and attractive, and fulfils its purpose to the very last detail. By considerably expanding the range of activities of the Fraternal Aid Society, bringing together a number of academic institutions under its roof, it fulfils its most important aim: to provide cheap and healthy housing for impoverished young people! Thus, 150 young people are to be permanently housed here (of these 12 free of charge: half the sons of indigent nobility, half peasants, grantees of Lir. Skarbek), already living, as they say, "on their own rubbish", with their own academic kitchen. In a word, the home so badly needed!

The immortal philaret gave a radiant name to its collegiate seat of future philarets. May they never forget it. May the "under Mickiewicz" shine always, valid for all, only the Philaret hasta: Homeland, science, virtue!
