Ewa Kujawska - painter

She is a graduate of the State Higher School of Visual Arts in Wrocław (currently the Academy of Fine Arts). She obtained her diploma in 1982, in the painting studio of Prof. Zbigniew Karpiński and in the studio of painting in architecture and urban planning under Prof. Mieczysław Zdanowicz. From 1982 to 1986, the artist lived in Algeria, whose culture and colour influenced her work. Since 1986, Ewa Kujawska has been living in Ottawa. She works in oil painting, acrylic painting, creates her own mixed techniques, collage, creates small spatial objects, combines different painting techniques and seeks new creative solutions in abstract painting. Ewa Kujawska's painting demonstrates her relationship with nature and her observation of the world of which we are a whole. Meditation plays a large part in the creative process, which fosters concentration, a vital connection with the 'thread of energy' that guides the artist in the process of creating a painting.

In 1992, on the occasion of the Grand Prix of Montreal, the artist won the Special Merit Award. In 1993, she was awarded first prize at the visual arts competition organised by Sodarco. In 2003, the artist was a finalist in the Painting of the Year 2002 competition organised by the Polish art magazine Art & Business and her work was presented at a post-competition exhibition at the Królikarnia Palace - a branch of the National Museum in Warsaw. In the 1990s, Gallery7 in Toronto and Caelum Gallery in New York represented the artist and exhibited her work. Ewa Kujawska co-created the layout of the Polish cultural magazine "High Park - Words, Thoughts, Images" published in Canada in the 1990s. In 2001, the artist participated in the International Gibraltar Point Artist Residency Program. She is a member of Canadian Artists Representation (CARFAC) and Toronto Artscape.

From 2004 to 2019, the artist collaborated with the City of Ottawa using the Stafford Studios at the Nepean Creative Art Centre, where she presented her work annually in solo and group exhibitions. For fifteen years, Ewa Kujawska was represented by Calligrammes Gallery in Ottawa. Since 2018, she has been working with the online art gallery EFE. In Europe, she is represented by Eine Art Galerie in Neuwied k./Frankfurt, and collaborates with Bouquinart Libraire and Galerie d'Art in Gatineau, Quebec.

Work in catalogue
Ewa Kujawska, 'Painting with a Shell/Image with a Shell', 2006, mixed technique, acrylic and sand on canvas, 116 x 116 cm. The artist's paintings demonstrate her close relationship with nature. The sunny space of "Shell painting" is covered with a thick layer of paint mixed with sand, which brings to mind a seaside beach. Shell crumbs are scattered across the picture plane with a central white shell. The geometric spiral pattern is associated with the symbolism of the sea, as well as with the labyrinth and the search for initiation, the quest for self-knowledge.
