Fountain of a Shepherd and a Shepherdess by Henri Proszynski in Neuvic

Variants of the name:

fr. Fontaine du berger et de la bergère

Situated in the public garden of the municipal square in Neuvic, the 'Fountain of the Shepherd and the Shepherdess', by the French sculptor of Polish origin Henri Proszynski (1887-1967), bears witness not only to the extensive investment by the Neuvic authorities in the decoration of public spaces in the 1930s, but also to the cultural and educational policy pursued during this period, aimed at emphasising the importance of agriculture.

Maintaining an art deco spirit, the geometrised fountain was realised by Proszynski in 1932. The object presents the local landscape of New Aquitaine as a New Arcadia. Referring to the classical topos of Arcadia, known, among other things, from Virgil's 'Bucolics' (Eclogue), an image of a world in which there is unchanging order, harmony of nature and culture, and its inhabitants live in a state of bliss, freedom and erotic freedom, the sculpture promotes agriculture. The topos of Arcadia found expression in the realisation of, on the one hand, the figure of a shepherd whispering tender words into the ear of a shepherdess, and, on the other, the representations of sheep walking along a fountain.
