Grave of two Poles from French partisan units

In Saint Plaisir (dep. Allier), there is a memorial dedicated to partisans who died in combat against a German unit. Partisan units of the FTP (Free Riflemen and Partisans) and AS (Secret Army), in which volunteers of other nationalities served in addition to Frenchmen, concentrated in the Civrais forest in numbers of almost 500 men and were attacked on 8.08.1944 by German military units in the area of the farm la Bouillole located at the edge of the forest. Among the victims were two civilians and eight resistance fighters, including three Poles.

In the municipal cemetery in Cerilly, 13km from Saint Plaisir, two Polish partisans killed at Bouillole on 8.08.1944 are buried in a single grave: Mieczysław Mirski and Antoni Witka. The resting place of the third Pole killed at that time, Stanisław Dobrowolski, is unknown.

The stone gravestone is located among other gravestones surrounding a circular high stone cross set on a pedestal. The commemoration of the Poles has the form of a horizontal slab, at the head of which is a cross on a two-stepped plinth with profiled upper edges. On the front, a dark stone plaque with the inscription: "MORTS POUR LA FRANCE / LE 8.8.1944 / MICEZLAW MIRSKI / NE A PRZEMYSL (POLOGNE) / LE 12.11.1923 / ANTOINE WIKA / NE A SOCHESLER (POLOGNE) LE 4.6.1896 / A.N.A.C.R.". Like the other surrounding graves and the central cross, this gravestone is neglected and covered with lichen; however, the plaque with the names of those buried is in good condition.
