In 1939 in Mosty Wielkie Ukrainians made up 50% of the population, Poles numbered more than 700, and Jews also lived here.

During the Second World War, Ukrainians murdered the Polish population here several times. 17 people, forestry workers and their families, were killed during an attack on 27.01.1944. In March and April 1944, bandits attacked Mosty Wielkie several times, murdering at least 50 people. The victims of these attacks were buried in the local cemetery. In addition, some victims of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army from the villages of Borowe, Dworce and Wolica (with the hamlets of Piaski, Rokitna and Wieczorki) were buried in this cemetery.

The initiator of the commemoration of the victims of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army was Czesław Filipowski, a native of Mosty Wielkie. He lost his mother and other close relatives here during the Ukrainian pogroms of 1944. He is also the author of the monument, unveiled on 12.10.1996 in the cemetery. The construction of the monument was financially supported by the Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Sites. The memorial plaques are engraved with 41 names of people buried in Mosty Wielkie and 109 names of people buried in other places and belonging to the parish of Mosty Wielkie. Among those commemorated are 136 Poles and 14 Ukrainians.

The memorial consists of a vertical black wall to which 4 plaques with the names of the victims are attached. In the middle rises a large white cross, bent as if under the blow of a forward blow. In front of the wall and the cross a flower bed has been arranged in a concrete border. The inscription reads: "To the memory of the Poles from the parish of Mosty Wielkie / who died on this land during the Second World War. / In this cemetery rest / [here follows a list of 41 names on 1 plaque] / Buried in other places / [here follows a list of 109 names on 3 plaques] / may their deaths be a warning to future generations".
