Mass grave of 5 Polish airmen in the local cemetery

On 17 September 1943, returning from a special mission over Poland, H.P. Halifax No. BB 309 of No. 301 Squadron was shot down over Slagllille by a German night fighter and fell onto the farm buildings, killing five of its occupants - the Christensen family. Five members of the crew were killed: Capt. W. Wasilewski, Sgt. J. Michalski, Sgt. W. S. Patlewicz, Sgt. W. Barzdo and Sgt. E. Kasprzak, while two pilots were rescued: Sgt. T. Miecznik (wounded, hospitalized) and Sgt. R. Puchała (taken prisoner). The fallen were buried in a mass grave in the local cemetery. In 1945, on the initiative of the Danish community, a stone was placed with the names of the airmen and an inscription in Danish: Herunder hviler, drabt i tjeneste den 17.9 1943, / Officer/Navigator Vizenti Wasilewski / Mekaniker Wladislaw Bardzo / Telegrafist Julian Michalski / Skytte Wladislaw Patlewicz / Pilot Eugenius Kasprzak / Ingen er storre end den der satter sit liv til for andre." ("Here lie the Polish pilots who died in Slaglille on 17 September 1943", [...] "No one is greater than the one who gives his life for others"). In 1970, a stone obelisk by Kazimierz Danielewicz was erected on the mass grave with the inscription in Danish: "I MINDE OM POLSKE FLYVERE / 25 ARET FOR AFSLUTNINGEN AF / 2. VERDENSKRIG / POLAKER I DANMARK / TIDLIGERE DANSKE FANGER I K. Z. Stuthof" ("In memory of Polish airmen, on the 25th anniversary of the end of World War II. Erected by survivors of Stutthof concentration camp") and in Polish and Danish: "FOR JERES FRIHED OG VIRES" / "For your freedom and our freedom".
